07/13/26 As I say goodbye to Orange County, I decided it would be fun to do a blog series featuring all of my favorite places. Dana Point Harbor, located in Dana Point, California is one of those places. Currently, there is a massive revitalization project underway (aka., big changes and a good time to reflect on past memories). The parking structure is new, but the first 4-hours remain free (this was always a plus for me). The walkability here is amazing and you can easily get your steps in if you are feeling a little antsy. People seem friendlier here, too (not sure why); they usually give you a “hi” as you pass by.
Cue memory- there was one day, I walked with a kind old man around the harbor who told me about his children. He was really proud of them and eager to share.
One thing I like to do while walking the harbor is spying the boat names. Today’s favorites included “Just Chillin”, “No Worries,” “Bad Decision,” and “Front Porch.” There are a lot of animals to spy, too. If you want to hang out with strange squirrels, this is the place to do it. I also love looking for seals, fish, ducks, cranes, and crabs.
If you still have energy after walking around the harbor, you can easily walk Heritage Park to get a better view of the harbor and the ocean. Though I never took advantage of it, I always thought of this park as a wonderful place to have a picnic, play catch, or read a book outside on a blanket. The beach is also in reach if you are in more of a sunscreen, surfer, and sand mood.
I have made a lot of memories at the harbor… solo ventures, reading/picking out cards at the gift chateau, getting smoothies at Organic Tree Juice Bar, taking a walk with a friend, and/or simply enjoying the Christmas season (e.g., the Merry Kiss Me setup, Christmas Tree with giant red chair in proximity, solar lights, decorated boats, etc.).
